Villagers and animals in a Better Minecraft cherry biome

What the Better Villagers mod does

Better Villagers is the umbrella term for a stack of villager-behaviour mods bundled into the Better Minecraft modpack. Together they rebuild villager AI from the ground up, villagers now actively defend their homes, sleep on schedule, respect their profession-locked hours, and restock trades at a rate that respects your time.

The core pieces are Guard Villagers (adds a Guard profession with iron sword and shield, patrols the village), Easy Villagers (drag-and-drop villagers into blocks so you can build a compact trading hall), and Villager Names (auto-generates a first + last name for every villager, so you actually remember which one is your librarian).

This page collects the install guide and configuration recommendations for the full stack. Each mod also works standalone.

Features

Guard profession

Villagers can be equipped with iron armor and iron sword to become guards. Guards patrol the village, engage hostile mobs, revive knocked-down villagers, and hold formation during raids.

Compact trading halls

Easy Villagers lets you place a villager inside a compact block, then hopper-in trade-item stacks and hopper-out results. A twelve-villager farm fits in a 4x4 wall.

Real restock timing

Trade restocks happen twice per Minecraft day at the workstation, not on random timers. If a villager cannot reach their job site, restocks stop, forcing you to build proper villager housing.

Villager names

Every villager gets a first + last name pulled from a biome-appropriate name pool. Names show above heads on hover and in trade GUIs.

Sleep + work schedules

Villagers respect real day-night schedules, sleep at 8 PM in-game, work 6 AM to 6 PM, breed and socialise in the evenings. Bells are used for meetups, raids and warnings.

Better Villagers FAQ

Can guards be armed with modded weapons?

Yes. Guards accept any item tagged as sword, axe or shield. Netherite swords, modded polearms, custom shields all equip correctly.

Do compact trading halls save server performance?

Yes, a compacted villager runs a stripped-down AI pathfinder. A twelve-villager compact hall costs less TPS than three normal villagers walking around.

What happens during raids?

Guards engage pillagers on sight. If you have Better Villages installed, guards defend the wall and gate positions. Raid casualties can be revived by other guards holding a golden apple.

Do villager names carry to zombie villagers?

Yes. Cure a zombie villager and the original name persists, useful for keeping track of your discount trader.
