Minecraft Better Archeology mod, the dig-site & artefact expansion
Loaders: Fabric + Forge, parallel builds · MC: 1.20.1 only (mod depends on vanilla 1.20 archaeology feature)

What the Better Archeology mod does
Better Archeology takes Minecraft 1.20's minor archaeology feature (a brush, a few pots, some suspicious sand) and expands it into a proper mid-game content pillar. New dig sites generate across every biome, each with its own artefact loot pool. Brushed-up artefacts are broken by default, restore them at a workbench using period-appropriate crafting materials, then display them on museum stands with plaques showing origin biome and estimated age.
The mod also adds brush upgrades (bronze, iron, netherite tiers), fossil-hunting mechanics for the End dimension, and a small NPC archaeologist who can generate dig-site maps for you if you trade them emeralds.
It is bundled in the Better Minecraft modpack. Standalone install below.
Features
Expanded dig sites
40+ new dig-site structures across all overworld biomes plus the Nether and the End. Every biome has a themed loot pool.
Restorable artefacts
Brushed artefacts drop broken. Restore at a workbench with material appropriate to the era, wood for early pottery, iron for mid-age tools, netherite for late-age relics.
Museum stands
Placeable display stand shows a restored artefact with an inscribed plaque, artefact name, origin biome, estimated age.
Brush upgrades
Craft bronze, iron and netherite brushes. Each tier brushes faster and has a higher rare-artefact drop rate.
Fossil-hunting in the End
End dimension gets a set of dig sites with prehistoric-fossil themed loot. Restore fossils to unlock decorative dinosaur-skeleton building blocks.

Better Archeology FAQ
Does it work without vanilla archaeology?
No. The mod requires 1.20+ because it hooks into vanilla brush and suspicious-block mechanics.
Do artefacts have gameplay effects?
Restored artefacts are mostly decorative. A small subset (Ancient Compass, Preserved Map, Miner's Amulet) do grant passive buffs.
Best biome to dig in?
Deserts have the highest dig-site density. Mesa biomes have the highest rare-artefact rate. Ocean floor dig sites drop the most emeralds.
Does the archaeologist NPC replace cartographers?
No, they coexist. Cartographers still sell explorer maps, the archaeologist sells dig-site maps specifically.
