Minecraft Better Trees mod, the canopy & species overhaul

Loaders: Fabric + Forge, parallel builds · MC: 1.19.2, 1.20.1

Dense forest with cherry blossom canopy and Minecraft characters

What the Better Trees mod does

Better Trees replaces every vanilla tree with a branching, canopy-style model that actually looks like a tree. Oak trees have thick trunks with radiating branches, birch trees grow tall and thin with high canopies, jungle trees form multi-layer forest ceilings, spruce trees layer needle-textured branches down their trunks. Every biome also gets one or two rare-species trees (Amaranth, Blossom Ash, Crimson Sycamore) that generate at low density and drop unique wood types.

The mod integrates with vanilla forestry, planted saplings grow into the Better Trees canopy variants, and existing wood in the world converts on chunk reload. Every wood type is craftable into a full block set (planks, stairs, slabs, doors, trapdoors, fences).

Bundled in the Better Minecraft modpack. Standalone install below.

Features

Canopy-style trees

Every vanilla tree species replaced with a branching-canopy model. Oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia and dark-oak all get species-appropriate silhouettes.

Rare-species trees

Each biome has a rare-species tree that generates at 5% density and drops unique wood, Amaranth (birch forests), Blossom Ash (dark-oak forests), Crimson Sycamore (savanna).

Full block set per wood type

Rare-species wood is craftable into planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs. Full parity with vanilla wood recipes.

Sapling growth

Planted saplings grow into the new canopy models. Bone-meal accelerates growth as expected.

Chunk-conversion of existing forests

When a chunk with vanilla trees is loaded after installing the mod, existing trees convert to Better Trees models on next tree-tick.

Better Trees FAQ

Does it change wood colour?

Vanilla wood colours are preserved. Rare-species wood has new unique colours (Amaranth is deep red, Blossom Ash is pale grey).

Do saplings work in bone meal?

Yes. Bone meal accelerates sapling growth exactly as in vanilla.

Does it break existing bases?

No. Only trees convert, placed logs and planks stay unchanged. Player-built log tree houses stay as you built them.

Where do rare-species trees spawn?

Every biome has one rare species. Look for taller-than-average canopies with unusual leaf colour, that is usually the rare-species indicator.
